About Us
WELCOME TO INTRANSITIVE RECORDINGS!
Intransitive is a record label and online magazine dedicated to electronic, electro-acoustic, and otherwise unclassifiable “experimental” music. No, I don’t like that term very much either, but it’s general enough to mean something to somebody. I’m Howard Stelzer, the little man behind the curtain… I started this label in Gainesville, Florida, in 1997, and have been based in the greater Boston area since 1998. What I publish is music that falls outside of traditional categories. If you hear two Intransitive releases and can sorta tell that there is some unifying aesthetic behind them both, but can’t quite put your finger on what that is, then I’ve done my job.
The magazine is Intransitive’s way of facilitating and making public the conversation that happens between artists, between artists and listeners, and between anyone who is curious about the issues that move people to make abstract sounds and the artists themselves. You will find Round Table discussions about issues related to sound-making… articles by artists about their own work, and dialogue between sympathetic folks… in-depth interviews, book excerpts, galleries of visual art and essays on film by sound artists, and accessible talk about the experience of thinking about and making this noise. Please join the conversation! Feel free to comment on articles that interest you, and share them with others. If you would like to submit an article, feel free to pitch an idea to me: hello@intransitiverecordings.com
And now… how about some Frequently Asked Questions?
Q: What is your demo policy?
A: We are not actively accepting any demos for release consideration. No really, I’m not kidding. Both of the labels have releases planned at least a year into the future, and I am quite slow in putting new things out. However, I also love to listen to music and am happy to check out whatever recordings you’d like to send my way. If your intention is friendly communication, then by all means drop a CDR or cassette tape in the mail to the address listed at the footer of this website. Please note that I cannot respond to every item that’s sent to me, even though I would love to if I had more time. Do not send me links to mp3s, SendSpace downloads, or MySpace pages. I will just delete those. I’m not a jerk, I just have very limited time. I like it when people say hello. Thanks!
Q: Aside from at the online store at this website, where can I buy your releases?
A: In the US, we are distributed by Forced Exposure, Mimaroglu Music Sales, Tedium House, and Midheaven/Revolver. Our titles are also available from Aquarius, RRRecords, Malignant Records, Misanthropic Agenda, Weirdo Records, Hospital Productions, Squidco. In Europe, we are distributed by Metamkine. In Japan, we are distributed by Improvised Music From Japan and Inpartmaint, with some releases available at Art Into Life and Molehill. Our digital distributor is 24 Hour Service Station. You can find select releases available as mp3 downloads from iTunes, eMusic, Amazon, and most of the usual places.
Q: I am a distributor, store, or mailorder catalog, and would like to sell your fine product. Who do I contact, and how does that work?
A: I’m so glad you asked! If you are based in Europe, contact Metamkine. If you are anywhere else in the world, write to hello@intransitiverecordings.com and we can discuss how you can distribute Intransitive Recordings and Songs From Under the Floorboards titles.
Q: I am a writer and would like to interview an artist whose CD is on your label. Can you please out me in touch?
A: Yes! Contact hello@intransitiverecordings.com in order to arrange an interview. If you write for a blog, please send us a link.
Q: Does Intransitive send review copies to radio stations?
A: I’m sorry, but we do not service radio stations with review copies.
Q: Are you a user of the social media that the kids these days like so well?

Q: Where can I buy your out of print releases?
A: We are steadily making our entire back catalog, including out of print titles, available for sale as digital downloads from iTunes, eMusic, etc. Select titles will also get actual, physical CD reissues, such as int14 Lionel Marchetti “Knud un Nom du Serpent”. There are even a few distributors and mail-order shops that still have some older titles kicking around…
Q: I am a band that’s touring through Boston. Can you help book a performance?
A: As of Summer 2010, Intransitive no longer hosts concerts in Boston. However, we may be able to point you in the direction of the right people to talk to about performing in the area, so feel free to get in touch: hello@intransitiverecordings.com
