Field Recordings, Volume 1: The Birthday
Greg Kelley, Curt Newton, Tatsuya Nakatani
OUT OF PRINT
Music for trumpet, percussion, house P.A., auto gain mic, audience and television
Recorded July 16, 1998, The Kirkland Cafe, Somerville, MA
The two-drummers-and-trumpet lineup was recorded at a brutal live performance in an unsympathetic bar onto a digital camera which was recording too loud. The confused soundman added unwanted effects onto the mic, and distorted the drums through the speakers. Crowd sounds, nasty artifacts of the recording method, and environmental noise overtake the performers at random, transforming what might have been simply a document of a fiery performance into… something completely else.
Praise for Field Recordings, Volume 1: The Birthday:
“Everything is loud on these two long tracks, as it should be. The ensemble for this CD is Greg Kelley, also of nmperign, on trumpet, with Tatsuya Nakatani and Curt Newton on percussion. The trumpet frequently embarks on warbly, take-no-prisoners runs, with both percussionists breathlessly pursuing. Very often, the mix gets busy and manic, with all of the musicians going at it like they were a crazed lynch mob. Really, it gets that intense. ” – Ink 19
“Much better by far than the last 723 shows at the Knitting Factory.” – Migidum Bligiblum
