Jim Haynes : Disaster and its Opposite
Electric Works • 130 8th Street • San Francisco, California
January 13 – Feburary 17
Opening January 13, 6 – 8 pm

Artist Reception: Friday, January 13, 6-8 PM

Electric Works is pleased to welcome back visual and sound artist Jim Haynes to the Project Space. Haynes creates almost-abstract images via a unique photographic and rust process. The resulting images feel like half-remembered dreams of the American landscape. Haynes is also branching out in new directions with this show: color photography is making its first appearance in his work at the gallery. This body of work not only contrasts nicely with the almost-black and white nature of his earlier work, but also reveals Haynes as a sensitive and subtle creator of photographic images, no matter the medium.

Jim Haynes lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area. His work has been exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Exploratorium (San Francisco), Westspace (Melbourne, Australia), Diapason (New York), Jack Straw Productions (Seattle), Works (San Jose), Eyedrum (Atlanta), The Fugitive Art Center (Nashville), and Varnish (San Francisco). He writes about sound art, noise culture, minimalism, and general music experimentation for The Wire, The San Francisco Bay Guardian, Metro Pulse, The Sound Projector, and Chunklet.

For Disaster and its Opposite, Jim Haynes pushes the photographic content toward two opposing extremes, with corroded photographs on one trajectory and richly hued color photography on the other. Haynes has worked with chemically distressed photography for close to twenty years, investigating the boundaries between the man-made and the natural. In this body of work, the content of the corroded photographs is specifically of sites of disaster and destruction, including several arson and demolition sites. It should be noted that the images from aftermath of the Merapi Volcano explosion from 2010 were taken by Matt Shoemaker and used with permission. The color photographs represent an abstracted opposite of the crumbled architecture of the corroded black & white images. The vibrant blues, reds, and greens of these color field images were augmented through optical printing errors and the unpredictability of a plastic lens camera. All of the visual elements are in turn augmented by a subtle sound design from modified shortwave radio reception and crackled noise through aestheticized but decidedly lo-fidelity speaker constructions.

About C. Spencer Yeh’s 1975

1975 is the debut solo album of prickly electro-acoustic miniatures by C. Spencer Yeh. Spacious tone clusters welcome us into Yeh’s private universe, alternating with bouts of clipped vocal fragments. As we move further in, the music grows more intimate and diffuse. Drones give way to delicate rustling and hovering shards of laser-focused feedback. Yeh explains the strategy: “One thing is I really wanted to focus on a certain feeling of stasis. So much of what else I do just kinda pushes and pushes forward. So in a way, 1975 is more vertical than horizontal, even though one can’t escape the horizontal completely. I also wanted to be very transparent, elemental and literal in this album.” The literal is there in the deceptively matter-of-fact titles — “Drone,” “Voice,” “Shrinkwrap from Solo Saxophone CD,” “Two Guitars (2005)” — but knowing which sound source is buried beneath these tones does little to remove the sense of mystery. 1975 is a work of confident, sensual minimalism with unsettling atmosphere.

About High & Mighty

High & Mighty Beer Company began in 2006 as an offshoot of Shelton Brothers beer importing company. Will Shelton took his idea for a novel German-style ale to Paper City Brewery in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and Beer of the Gods was born, to extraordinary commercial success, critical acclaim, and unabashed adoration from beer geeks the world over.

Eventually, Will discovered that he enjoyed selling the beer he made even more than he did the splendid beers that Shelton Brothers imports, and in June 2008, he abandoned his brother to focus on making American beer that added an American attitude to the best of European beer styles. The beer is still lovingly made at Paper City, but look for High & Mighty to open a brewery of its own in 2011.

About Aviary Gallery

Aviary is a gallery and artist boutique located in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. It was founded in the spring of 2011 by Lindsay Metivier with the purpose of creating a space for established and emerging artists to share their work with the greater Boston community. Aviary is not intended to be a traditional exhibition space. Aside from serving as a gallery, Aviary offers a curated selection of local art, photography, jewelry, books and crafts. Beyond gallery hours, the space will host workshops, lectures, concerts, film screenings and performances.

Thank you to Intransitive Recordings, High & Mighty Beer Company, and Aviary Gallery for making this event possible!

The official line-up for this year’s Amplify Festival, titled Amplify 11: Stones and hosted by Erstwhile Records at The Stone in New York City, has been announced. It’s an ambitious schedule, thirteen concerts from September 1 through 15, two performances per night. Each performance costs $10, so catching both sets on a night would set you back $20. That’s actually a pretty good deal. If you go to Katz’ for pastrami on rye with Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray and a knish before and/or after the show, your dinner will cost you more than the concert tickets.

I think the limit to two sets per night is a nice way to present a festival; at festivals I’ve attended in the past, my ears and brain have grown weary after absorbing multiple consecutive performances that each demand serious concentration. By the time the later acts have gone on, I’ve been mentally and physically exhausted from sitting in the same room for so long, and can hardly recall what came earlier. Amplify 11: Stones will take place over a longer amount of time, but with just an 8pm and a 10pm show. That’s a good size chunk of sound to take in, I think. The two-act framework also makes a strong curatorial statement, since each act appears to be deliberately chosen as a compliment to the set it shares an evening with.

The line-up features some of the Erstwhile usual suspects, a few new faces, and our good friend Jason Lescalleet performing a solo set. On Sunday Sept 4, Jason plays at 8pm, followed by a duo of Keith Rowe and Christian Wolff. Other Intransitive pals scheduled to appear include David Kirby (of the Homophoni net-label… go download his free releases now), Graham Lambkin (who painted the lovely cover image for my LP with David Payne), Ben Owen (head honcho of the magnificent Winds Measure Recordings label), Taku Unami, Richard Kamerman, and the always-brilliant Olivia Block.

Yep, you read that subject line correctly. Andrea Katharina, better known as Mama Baer to you and me, has entered a contest sponsored by the Swedish margarine company LAETTA to be their new “Leatta Frau”. In order to enter, the frau has to film herself in some sort of commercial featuring the product. The latest communique from our man in Flensburg, Kommissar Hjuler, explains it all:

Hello! Mama Baer wants to get the new LAETTA-Girl, so possibly you might help us by voting for her. You simply need to follow this link in order to vote for her.

Und: Mama Baer bewirbt sich natürlich mit einem MUSIK(?)-Video, haha!

Vielen Dank, thanks a lot,
- Mama Baer und Kommissar Hjuler

So what are ya waiting for? Vote early! Vote often! Vote Mama Baer!
